From law to translation

The idea for Orange Tree was born 20 years ago. At that time, Martin Štulík and Alžběta Soperová studied law in Prague, but they both felt more passionate about foreign languages than clauses, fine print, acts and bills. Martin grew up with English thanks to his mother, an English-born Canadian, who is also a translator. The apple… well, the orange didn’t fall far from the tree.

And since Alžběta (who would later become a sworn translator) was not afraid to tackle even the toughest language problems, the two classmates put the idea into practice. They were soon joined by Markéta Lukášová (now Štulíková), who took care of the human resources and Orange Tree’s offices. When she and Martin became partners in life, not just work, the business took off in full swing.

Further assets started joining the team. Young and talented translators with ambitions to become top in their field learned first hand from Orange Tree’s founders. They also brought with them expertise in particular fields, such as pharmacy or marketing. A student at the time and the current head of the “orange groves” as it were, Barbora Vodičková, was among those pioneers.

Orange Tree’s first customers were our founders’ classmates at university. Most of them pursued careers in the legal profession after graduating and knew that they could rely on Martin and Alžběta. Thanks to their reputation and network, the young translators hit the ground running. They delivered high-quality translations and further proved themselves reliable. Naturally, they started securing more contracts. Orange Tree grew beyond Prague and has taken roots in Brno and Plzeň under the supervision of Jan Adámek and Lucie Melicharová.

With work flooding in, we realised a need to grow and establish our sales team. Thanks to the excellent ideas of our amazing Operations and Sales Director, Lucie Fajkusová, we managed to further expand the list of satisfied clients. In 2022, we joined forces with the legend in interpreting, Artlingua. Artlingua brings to the table their interpreting expertise, and assists in translating mainly creative texts, including those for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

With Orange Tree blossoming with a team of young professionals, we realised we couldn't be a traditional agency providing mechanical translations. As modern technologies progressed at the same time the company grew, our founders decided to squeeze the best out of new translation tools. And so began a cycle of training and testing, until we fine-tuned a unique procedure which utilises people and translation software efficiently. It proved so successful that it is now being passed on to current and future translators at universities. It’s also accessible directly through the Orange Tree Translators’ HUB platform.
